YUKA Saso fired an eagle-aided 71 yesterday and stood in an eight-way tie for 29th at the start of the HSBC Women’s World Championship at the Tanjong Course of the Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore.
Saso had a promising start on the front nine with an eagle on the par-five hole No. 5 and a birdie on No. 8, only to falter with bogeys on Nos. 12 and 13 over the par-72, 6,749-yard course located on the scenic resort island nestled in Keppel Harbor.
The defending US Women’s Open champion was four strokes behind Thailand’s Patty Tavanakit, who gained a one-shot lead with a bogey-free 67 over a trio of top contenders — American Danielle Kang and South Koreans Inbee Park and A Lim Kim — who all carded identical 68s. — Bong Pedralvez
