AS part of their preparations in their bid to qualify for the Paris Olympics in July, the national rowing team is scheduled to have a training camp in Yangzhou, China this month, according to national rowing coach Ed Maerina.

“Our rowers will have a training camp at the Yangzhou Deep Dive Grand Center at the Eco-Tech City in Yangzhou,” said Maerina, who will be joining the team together with Uzbek coach Shukrat Ganiev.

The rowers who will train in China are Tokyo Olympic Games veteran Cris Nievarez, Zuriel Sumintac, Rynjie Peñaredondo, Joanie del Gaco and Kristine Paraon.

“We are hopeful that we can have more Olympic rowers who will be able to compete in Paris, which is why we are arranging this training camp for them in China,” said Maerina, who represented the country in the 1998 Seoul Olympics.

In the meantime, the rest of the national rowers will continue their workouts at their training venue at the La Mesa Dam Reservoir in Quezon City.

He said the World Rowing Asian and Oceania qualification regatta is scheduled from April 19 to 21 in Chunju, South Korea.

Competing in the men’s singles, Nievarez made his Olympic debut in the Japanese capital three years ago and wound up 23rd overall in his event.
