MARINERONG Pilipino-San Beda University coach Yuri Escueta is trying with all his might to instill to the Red Lions a cautious mindset when they face lighter foes.
“Rerespetuhin namin lahat ng kalaban namin,” Escueta said. “Iyon naman palagi ang mindset. Hindi namin sila puwedeng i-take for granted.”
The Lions’ resolve will be tested anew when they eye a share of the lead against the CCI-Yengskivel Crusaders today in the PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
The game is set at 4:30 p.m. before Centro Escolar University tries to atone for an opening game loss when it tangles with Keanzel Basketball at 7:30.
After a two-week break, Marinerong Pilipino-San Beda is hoping to remain sharp against an opponent on a high after CCI-Yengskivel scored an 80-73 victory against Keanzel Basketball last Tuesday.
A third straight win by the Lions would push them into a tie with the reigning two-time champions EcoOil-La Salle Green Archers, who clobbered the Scorpions 89-61 two days back.
“Siyempre, San Beda ang isa sa teams to beat dito kasama ang La Salle. Kailangan namin mag-double time talaga,” Crusaders strategist Arwin Adina. “Ang taktika na lang siguro ay makadikit hanggang kaya at baka makasingit sa end game.”
NCAA finals MVP James Payosing, Yukien Andrada and Jomel Puno, along with prized acquisitions Bryan Sajonia and Penny Estacio, are expected to carry the fight for Escueta’s team.
CCI-Yengskivel will bank on Victor Ryan Nuarin, Castor Troy Manipolo, Kenneth Tener and Kenjie Ryan Buenaflor.
