AIMING to display leadership by example, Philippine Sports Commission chief Richard Bachmann took some of his officials and staff for a ride in the Sun Life Cycle PH event at the Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub in Imus, Cavite over the weekend.
“I wanted to have some bonding time with my staff out of the office and see also who was also into cycling, so I asked Fred (Uytengsu, who heads Sunrise and is the organizer of Cycle PH) to give us slots for the event,” Bachmann, a former triathlete, said.
“That was how I discovered that Commissioner Walter Torres is also a recreational biker.”
Now in his mid-fifties, Bachmann said he had himself and the rest of the PSC staff registered for the 45-kilometer distance, thinking he would be trailing most of the PSC staff several years younger than him.
“As it turns out, I got ahead and after two rounds had to wait for them to catch up. When Com Wawit (Torres’ nickname) caught up I said that I would wait for the rest for another 10 minutes. But when no one else came we decided to go ahead and finish the event,” Bachmann bared. “I wanted us to finish as one.”
Bachmann expressed hope that by engaging in activities like the Cycle PH, “more of my staff will be encouraged to join us so we can know more and become closer with each other. Next time, I would like Com Fritz Gaston to be with us.”
He said he and the PSC staff will have another opportunity to draw closer with one another during a two-day team-building event this Friday and Saturday involving around 400 of the government sports agency’s personnel at a seaside hotel resort in Morong, Bataan.
