LIGHTWEIGHT John Steven Demaisip banked on the strength of his explosive performance in the first two rounds to carve out a convincing unanimous decision (5-0) win over Czech Simon Sedenka early yesterday morning (Sunday night in the US) to gain a quarterfinal slot in the World Boxing Under-19 Championships in Pueblo, Colorado.

Demaisip punished Sedenka in the second round for a standing eight-count on the way to earning the nod of the judges, three of them scoring it 29-28 and the other two scoring it 30-26 and 30-27, according to boxing secretary general Marcus Manalo.

“We hope that he (Demaisip) can sustain his performance in his next bout,” Manalo said of the Pinoy pug’s coming bout against Australian Cassar Jacob, who stopped Welsh Alfie Douglas Lewis seven seconds into the third and final round.

Manalo was disappointed by the outcome of the match by featherweight Jerome Lopez, who absorbed a 0-5 whitewash at the hands of Canadian Julian Agelakis.

“We were disappointed with the result of Jerome Lopez’s bout because we thought he clearly won with his good combinations to the body and head. His volume of punches and accuracy were better compared to the Canadian, but the judges saw it differently,” Manalo rued.

Manalo was also upset by the result of the women’s flyweight quarterfinal match of Xian Baguhin, who dropped a 1-4 split decision to American Laila Zakirova.

“Xian performed well and could have actually won the bout. She won the last round, and we thought she also won the first round but only one judge gave her that round,” Manalo said.
