Pinoy chess bets second in Thailand

INTERNATIONAL Masters Daniel Quizon and Michael Concio Jr. led the way as the country bagged overall runner-up honors with 16 gold, 37 silver and eight bronze medals in the 21st Asean + Age Group Chess Championships in Bangkok, Thailand that ended last Tuesday.

Vietnam took the overall championship by amassing 92 golds, 36 silvers and 50 bronzes with a contingent of 165 players while the Philippine delegation had 50.

Players from Brunei, China, Russia, Indonesia, India, Japan, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Singapore and Thailand also competed in the meet.

A native of Dasmarinas City, Cavite, Quizon copped gold medals in the Under-20 division in both the individual standard, team and blitz events on top of a pair of silvers in the individual and team rapid events.

Concio won golds in the Under-20 team standard and blitz events on top of silvers in the individual and team rapid events.

In the seniors’ division, National Master Edmundo Gatus and Raul Damuy had two golds each.

National Chess Federation of Philippines chairman and president Butch Pichay cited the accomplishments of the Pinoy bets, saying: “Once again, our young players showed their mettle in international play so I am very proud of them.”

Also delivering for the Filipinos were FIDE Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca (Open U-18) of Panabo, Davao del Norte, Mar Viel Carredo (U-12) of Quezon City, Millery Gen Subia (U-10) of Cabanatuan, and Ruelle Canino (U-16) and Ashzley Aya Nicole Paquinol (U-12) both of Cagayan de Oro.
