FILIPINO squash players swept the men’s and women’s singles titles to stamp their class in the Thailand Individual Squash International Championships in Bangkok, Thailand over the weekend.
In a close all-Filipino duel, Reymark Begornia outlasted No. 1 seed and teammate Robert Garcia 11-7, 7-11, 11-8, 8-11, 12-10 in a 48-minute thriller to capture his first international title outside the Philippines.
“I was a bit surprised by the result but Begornia really played well so is deserving of the title,” said Philippine Squash Academy President Bob Bachmann of the 2019 Southeast Asia Squash Cup men’s champion.
Making it a double celebration for the national team was Jemyca Aribado, who just took 23 minutes to dismantle Malaysian top seed Sel Shasmithaa 11-8, 11-4, 11-10 in the women’s singles finals in the outing supported by the Philippine Sports Commission.
