Pinay spikers finish 7th in Asian tourney

THE Philippines finished its campaign in the AVC Challenge Cup for Women with a 25-14, 13-25, 25-18, 25-18 victory over Uzbekistan yesterday to wind up seventh at the Tri Dharma Petrokimia Gresik Gymnasium in Indonesia.

The Filipina spikers, led by team captain Aiza Pontillas, unleashed 50 attacks, nine blocks and six service aces in their last match, dumping the Uzbeks to eighth.

Pontillas, along with Faith Nisperos, Shaya Adorador, Michelle Cobb, Djanel Cheng, AC Miner, Ezra Madrigal, Erika Raagas, Bang Pineda, Roma Doromal and their other teammates shone for the Philippines in the week-long competition.

Last Friday, the team missed the opportunity to advance in the semifinal round after losing to Australia 18-25, 22-25, 25-21, 20-25 in the quarterfinals.

The national team found itself battling for seventh place following a 20-25, 13-25, 16-25 loss to Iran two days ago.
