ROBERT Garcia, the country’s top squash player, began his campaign to rise in the world rankings yesterday by competing in five Professional Squash Association Challenger Tour events, kicking off with the Costa North Coast Open in Coffs Harbour, Australia.

“Robert is currently No. 166 in the PSA world rankings and we sent him to this circuit because we want him to earn ranking points, so he gets to play in stronger tournaments,” said Philippine Squash Association president Robert Bachmann yesterday of the stint backed by the Philippine Sports Commission.

After the Costa North Coast Open, Garcia will also play in the Alta Group Pennant Hills NSW Squash open scheduled Aug. 25 to 28 in Sydney; Volwagen Bega Open set Aug. 31 to Sept. 4 in Bega, Australia; City of Devenport Open Tamania Open slated Sept. 7 to 11 in Devonport; and the East Side Open from Sept. 14 to 18 in Hobart.

“We hope Garcia’s exposure in these PSA Challenger Tour events will also toughen him up for the bigger events ahead and inspire our other national athletes to excel so that they can also compete abroad,” Bachmann said.

Bachmann said the PSA national training center at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex was in its finishing touches and expressed hope the national athletes would be able to train there as soon as possible.

Funded by the PSC and built just beside the Rizal Memorial Stadium, the facility features two regular squash courts and a bigger one for jumbo doubles.
