AMID the hoopla of the Filipinas competing in the FIFA Women’s World Cup next month, the Philippine Football Federation Women’s League kicks off tomorrow with 10 teams in the fray, with a double header kicking off play at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.
Tried and tested squads UP Diliman and Tuloy Football Club tangle in the 4 p.m. opener while the UST Lady Tigresses battle Manila Digger, composed of former UAAP standouts, at 6:30 p.m. in the competition aspiring to be a breeding ground for the national women’s football squad.
Also vying in the single-round weekly tournament are Kaya-Iloilo, Nomads, Stallion Laguna, defending champion FEU, La Salle and Azzurri.
“We would like to thank the PFF first and foremost for coinciding the start of the league with the participation of the national women football team in the FIFA Women’s World Cup next month. I think this is the perfect time for this side of the game to have an extra push,” noted UP Diliman coach Antu Gonzales, whose Lady Maroons were the losing finalists last season.
“We also hope that our entry in the World Cup will enable the PFF to start a strong foundation in the development of the women’s side with more homegrown players competing for the Filipinas,” Gonzales added.
