MORE than women’s power.

The WNCAA’s 56th edition is set to start this Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Makati Coliseum with the country’s premier league for women out to leave no stone left unturned in its drive for more success—and outside of it.

“We celebrate not only the athletic skills, but also the courage, determination and trailblazing spirit of women,” Sister Irene Cecile Torres, R.A., President of host school Assumption College San Lorenzo, said during the season launch yesterday at the Paradiso Hall of the Henry Sy Sr. Hall of the institution in Makati.

“Our theme this year is more than a slogan. It is a call to action. It unites us that every time we step into the arena, we are not just playing for ourselves; we are also paving the way for others.

“We are breaking stereotypes and proving that women belong in every field of the arena,” she added.

Thirteen disciplines are included in the WNCAA slate that include basketball, volleyball, futsal, badminton, swimming, chess, taekwondo, poomsae, table tennis, cheerleading, street dance and cheerdance.

Raring to show they have what it takes in three divisions (elementary, high school and college) are Centro Escolar University, Assumption Antipolo, Chiang Kai Shek College, De La Salle Santiago Zobel School, La Salle College Antipolo, Miriam College, Philippine Women’s University, Saint Jude Catholic School, San Beda College Alabang, St. Paul College Pasig, St Scholastica’s College, St. Stephen’s High School, University of Asia & Pacific, University of Makati, and University of Santo Tomas-Angelicum College.

“We take pride in elevating the role of women not just in sports, but to their overall being,” Torres said, who was joined by WNCAA secretary-general Ma. Angelica Dela Cruz, CEU President Juanita Alamillo, Ma. Vivian Manila, Bernadette Abrilla, BED and director for student affairs of Assumption College, and Gerald Ibuna, BED team leader.

Matches slated in the opening’s regular 5-on-5 cage tilt will feature Assumption College against Assumption Antipolo at 1 p.m., followed by Angelicum versus St. Jude at 2:30 p.m., and CEU vs. University of Makati at 4 o’clock.

Volleyball, futsal and basketball 3×3 competitions open shop on Sunday, Sept. 7.
