SHOWING marked improvement from her previous outing, Rosegie Ramos bagged a bronze medal in the snatch and total lifts while setting three new national marks on Saturday night in the women’s 49kg division of the World Weightlifting Championships in Manama, Bahrain.
A native of Zamboanga City and a cousin of Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Hidylin Diaz-Naranjo, Ramos, 20, placed third in the snatch and combined lifts with hoists of 88 kilos and 193, respectively, surpassing her national standards of 87 and 190 kilos in the two events.
Although she was only fourth in the clean-and-jerk, her lift of 105 was also two kilos heavier than her previous best of 103 in the weight class where North Korea’s Ri Song Gum secured mints in the clean-and-jerk (122) and total lifts (213).
The North Korean failed to sweep all three events, with China’s Xiang Lingxiang bagging the gold in the snatch (91) and winning silvers in the clean and jerk (120) and total lifts (212) of the competition sanctioned by the International Weightlifting Federation.
It was a dramatic rise for Ramos in the weight division after placing seventh overall in the 2023 edition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where she lifted 86kg in the snatch, 102 kg in the clean-and-jerk and 188kg in total lift.
Cebuano Fernando Agad emerged as the country’s first medalist in his debut in the world meet, winning the bronze medal in the men’s 55kg category with a total lift of 263 kilos during the opening of the competition last week.
Set to compete tomorrow in the women’s 64kg category is back-to-back Olympic Games veteran and Cebuana Elreen Ann Ando, who, like Agad, is a product of the grassroots program of PSC Commissioner Edward Hayco when he was still the chairman of the Cebu Sports Commission.
