PARIS Paralympic Games veteran Cendy Asusano won her second gold by ruling the women’s javelin throw F54 and F56 event with a heave of 14.70 meters yesterday in the second leg of the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in New Delhi, India.
Asusano also bagged the women’s shot put F54 gold with a throw of 5.91 meters, with national teammate Marites Burce (4.73) securing the bronze medal at the sprawling Jawarharlal Nehru Stadium in the Indian capital.
Another veteran of the Paris Paralympic Games, wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan, bagged the country’s third gold the other day with a time of one minute and .08 seconds in the men’s 400-meter T52 event.
Mangliwan also won a silver medal in the men’s 1,500-meter and a bronze medal in the men’s 100-meter T52 race in the competition sanctioned by the World Para Athletics.
Among the silver medalists was Arvie John Areglado, who placed second in the men’s 100-meter T47 run in a time of 11.31 seconds and Cyril Cloyd Ongcoy in the men’s 1,500-meter T11 and T12 race in clocking 4:25.65.
National para track and field head coach Joel Deriada said in a text message that the PH para campaigners, supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, had so far won three golds, four slivers and four bronze medals near the end of the three-day meet.
“This is a good and encouraging start for our national track and field athletes as we begin our season, and hopefully they will improve and perform better in the succeeding overseas competitions this year,” Deriada said.
