THE National University Pep squad completed its redemption bid last night.
Grooving to an out-of-this-world performance, the NU Pep Squad returned to the Promised Land in the 87th UAAP Cheerdance competition at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.
After a bridesmaid finish last season, the NU Pep Squad wowed the crowd of 19,121 fans with 713 points.
It marked NU’s eight title overall, tying the UST Salinggawi Troupe and UP Pep Squad with the most diadems in the league.
The Sampaloc-based cheer side tallied 86.5 markers in tumbling, 91.5 in stunts, 91 in tosses, 85 in pyramids, 368 in dance for its gravity-defying act.
Aside from the cash prize of P100,000 from the league and Dunkin, NU also swept all special awards— the MWell Power Performance award, Juicy-fied Pyramid, AIA Ascend Best Aerial Performance, Jollibee Best Toss, Silka Stay Lit Dance Move award, Skechers Stylish Performance award, Yamaha Most Unique Dance Move award, and the MAX Most Synchronized Dance Move, with a sum of P280,000 and a special edition UAAP x MWell Special Edition Power Watch in prizes.
“Iyong suporta talaga ng management namin and the NU community, iyong program na patuloy naming pinapataas pa rin. Hindi kami nagiging stagnant, patuloy kaming naga-achieve pa ng something new for the UAAP cheerdance competition,” NU coach Gabby Bajacan said.
The Adamson Pep Squad first runner-up this season following its karaoke medley-inspired performance.
After missing the podium last year, Adamson got an overall score of 679.5 points following its act from the tunes of “Breathless” by The Corrs, “Dancing Queen” by ABBA, and “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor.
The erstwhile champion FEU Cheering Squad settled for third with 650 points following Disney’s “Frozen” theme.
Adamson and FEU won P60,000 and P40,000, respectively.
The UE Pep Squad placed fourth (641 points), followed by UST (634.5), and UP (560).
The DLSU Animo Squad (525) wound up seventh while the Ateneo Blue Eagles emerged dead last (490).
