BACK in fighting shape, promising Fil-Am gymnast and national team hopeful Lauren Supnet stamped her class by sweeping her four events in the US Artistic Gymnastics Level 10 Regional Championships over the weekend at the Clark County Event Center in Vancouver, Washington.
A double gold medalist in the GAP Challenge Cup held two weeks ago at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, Supnet ruled the women’s vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercises with scores of 9.700, 8.850,9.700 and 9.400, respectively.
With those outputs, the petite and pretty athlete completed her fine show by scooping up the individual all-around gold with a tally of 37.650 points in the competition that drew the best of women’s artistic gymnastics bets from Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.
“Those are pretty high scores in the apparatus considering that the highest is 10,” noted her mother, Wilhelmina Delostrinos Supnet, a niece of top lawyer Atty. Raymond Fortun.
“She is now the Region 2 champion after competing against the top Level 10 (or highest) gymnasts from those states,” she added.
“Next for Lauren will be the US National Championships, where all of the top gymnasts from the eight USAG regions will compete and is set for May 8 to 11 in Salt Lake City, Utah,” Mrs. Supnet said.
The athlete’s mom revealed that her daughter might represent the country overseas for the first time in the Asian Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships slated June 12 to 16 in Jecheon, South Korea.
The competition, sanctioned and organized by the Asian Gymnastics Union, will serve as the qualifying meet for the 53rd Artistic Gymnastics World Championships from Oct. 19 to 25 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
“We will know by April 22 whether GAP will be able to make it to the Asian meet, which would be a great honor and privilege for Lauren if she does participate there,” the elder Supnet said.
