DEFENDING champion National University showed up with a renewed sense of urgency against gritty Adamson University and was aptly rewarded with handsome dividends yesterday.

With reigning Rookie-MVP Mhicaela Belen showing the way, the Lady Bulldogs tripped the Lady Falcons 26-24, 25-16, 25-22 for their seventh win in the 85th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Belen fired 20 points and 11 excellent receptions for NU, while Alyssa Solomon chipped in 11 markers.

Vange Alinsug also had 10 hits as the Lady Bulldogs scored a big follow up to a 25-21, 27-25, 25-20 victory over University of the Philippines last April 1 and hiked their mark to 7-3 in a three-way tie with Adamson and University of Santo Tomas for second.

The Lady Falcons came off a 25-23, 25-17, 26-24 triumph over Ateneo 12 days ago.

“Pinaghandaan po kasi talaga namin iyong game na ito and we set iyong goal namin na dapat ipanalo namin yung game na ito kasi kailangan na po naming manalo na,” Belen said. “Hindi na po namin kailangang matalo. Siguro po meron ding (extra motivation) kasi iyon nga po dikit iyong laban namin noong first round.”

“Kamuntikan pa po kaming matalo noon so sinabi namin ngayon dapat iyong win namin talagang maganda, talagang masasabi mong panalo po kami,” she added.
