No lifting, boxing in NCAA, for now

THE NCAA is after the welfare of its athletes in these times.

While the suggestion of Hidilyn Diaz, Nesthy Petecio, Carlo Paalam, and Eumir Marcial, who won medals in the just-concluded Tokyo Olympics that weightlifting
and boxing should be added in collegiate leagues are welcome, the country’s oldest collegiate league will wait for the return of some sort of normalcy.

“It was discussed in one of the meetings of the ManComm na why not include weightlifting and boxing and other Olympic medal sports in the NCAA. Remember, si Hidilyn ay from CSB din,” a highly-reliable source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Malaya-Business Insight yesterday.

“Pero right now, we will wait na makabalik ang mga atleta natin kasi we’re still in this pandemic. Kapag okay na, we will make moves. Mahirap pa magpasok ng new sports ngayon.”

Taekwondo and chess were both held online, while alumni from all 10 member-schools participated in All-Star Skills competitions for both basketball and volleyball.

Taekwondo saw College of St. Benilde dominating the women’s and men’s speed kicking events and San Beda topping the juniors’ side. San Beda ruled the seniors’ poomsae, while Emilio Aguinaldo College swept the juniors competition.

Lyceum won the seniors’ chess courtesy of Neymark Digno, while Letran turned to FIDE Master Christian Mark Daluz to emerge victorious in the juniors’ side.

Former Lady Knight spiker Mikaela Lopez had a successful comeback by copping the volleyball skills challenge plum, while Lyceum’s Kim Cinco took the basketball skills challenge trophy.
