NLEX taps Lim as new head coach

AFTER parting ways with decorated coach Yeng Guiao early this month, the Road Warriors are linking up with a veteran champion tactician in the collegiate ranks.

Frankie Lim is reportedly set to take over at the helm of NLEX, returning to the PBA after seven years.

Lim, 62, called the shots for Ginebra in 2015 but his stint was short-lived as the Kings failed to reach the semifinals of the Governors’ Cup after losing to the defunct Alaska Aces in the quarterfinals. Lim was fined P50,000 and suspended for one game for physically confronting Calvin Abueva.

He coached Perpetual Help in the NCAA and guided the Altas to the Final Four in 2018 before falling short the following season.

Lim could not be reached for comment yesterday.

A former PBA player who had stops with Purefoods, Tanduay, and Alaska, Lim left the Perpetual coaching job amid the COVID-19 pandemic two years ago after the Las Piñas-based school shut down its athletics program and failed to fulfill its financial obligations to the four-time champion NCAA strategist with San Beda University.

At NLEX, it will be a homecoming of sorts for Lim, who served as assistant coach at Mobiline and team manager in the late 1990s to the early 2000s.

A strict and stern coach with a penchant for spartan-like training, Lim was also a former team manager of Gilas Pilipinas.

Lim left the MVP Group in 2012 after his involvement in the infamous brawl with the San Sebastian College volleyball squad and the Red Lions.

He became an assistant at Ginebra before getting the job in lieu of Ato Agustin.
