AFTER the sports division of ABS-CBN was shut down last Thursday, what’s next for the network and its partners, like the NCAA and the UAAP?.
Arellano University Management Committee representative Peter Cayco said ABS-CBN and the NCAA are exploring other options.
“Our (ManCom) meeting (last Thursday) was okay. We discussed possible scenarios if ever (the) NCAA is allowed by the IATF to resume,” Cayco told Malaya-Business Insight yesterday.
“We’re sad about ABS-CBN’s closure. We have to sit down with them to discuss options,” he added.
Cayco, last season’s ManCom chair, said there are no ongoing talks of contract buyout between the league and the embattled mass media giant.
The NCAA has five years left in its 10-year pact with the network.
“No talks of buyout. There is always hope,” said Cayco.
The 95th season of the country’s oldest collegiate league was scrapped mid-March at the start of the government-imposed lockdown to curb the spread of the lethal virus.
Due to the lingering health risks and uncertainties posed by the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA is looking to launch its 96th season early next year.
Most parts of the country, including Metro Manila, have transitioned into the less strict general community quarantine last June 1.
The Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases has already given the green light for the PBA and Philippines Football League teams to resume training last July 3 but recreational basketball games, however, remain prohibited under GCQ.
The government’s nod was also only for pro basketball and football.
The waiting game continues for the NCAA teams before they could be allowed to go back to training, according to Cayco.
