MOMMY Caring rode on an explosive start to rule the 2021 Philracom-Philippine Sportswriters Association Stakes Race with relative ease at the San Lazaro Leisure Park in Cavite last Sunday.
The progeny of Striding Ahead and On A Mission and bred by businessman Hermie Esguerra, Mommy Caring covered the 1,600-meter race in 1:41.9 (24’-24’-24’-28) to give the P300,000 top purse to owner James Anthony Rabano.
“Inasahan ko na kami ang mananalo,” said jockey Lester de Jesus, who personally requested that Mommy Caring be the last one to enter the gates before the start. “Mabisyo siya kaya talagang ni-request ko na huli siyang papasok.”
It was a formula that worked to near perfection as the three-year-old charger came out strongly on gate No. 4 and never allowed anybody to grab the lead from her, leading by two lengths heading into the far turn and by three in the homestretch.
“Born sprinter talaga at kampante siya na ang laro niya nasa unahan,” said trainer Ramon Nartea.
Luke Skywalker staged a late rally and placed second for P100,000 while Tocque Bell finished third for P50,000.
The stakes race is for the benefit of the PSA, the oldest media organization in the Philippines which includes sports editors and sportswriters from the country’s leading broadsheets, tabloids, and online media, as it continues to extend assistance to its members in need and those impacted by the current pandemic.
