Mixed results for PH chessers

FILIPINO chessers had mixed results yesterday at the start of the individual standard tournament in the 31st Vietnam Southeast Asian Games at Quí ng Ninh Exhibition Palace of Urban Planning & Expo Center in Ha Long City. Quang Ninh Province.

National coach Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales said in a Viber message that Grandmaster John Paul Gomez drew his match with Vietnamese GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong, while International Master Daniel Quizon lost to Malaysian IM Yeoh Li Tian.

In the women’s division, Woman Grand Master Janelle Mae Frayna drew with Woman International Master Jan Jodilyn Fronda.

Gonzales said that in the women’s division “all players from the same country in the first round, as a mandatory rule in the round robin system, must play each other in this kind of event.”

The Pinoy standard-bearers aim to restore pride after they suffered a medal shutout in the 2019 Philippine edition of the sportsfest, with IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia being the saving grace in winning the online chess tournament, a demonstration event.
