Mariano laid to rest this Wednesday

CLIDORO “Clyde” Mariano, former sportswriter of Tempo/ Bulletin, Pilipino Mirror, and Bulgar, will be laid to rest this Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the Silangan Memorial Garden in Bacoor, Cavite.

Interment is at 2 p.m. He passed away last Jan. 19 at 79.

He is survived by children Joey, Danny, and Rose, and grandchildren Jhoros and Angelica.

His remains lie in state at the family residence at Blk 5 Lot 26, Banaba Street, Camella Sorrento Habay 1, Bacoor, Cavite.

Known by his nickname “Clyde” or “James” to friends in the sports community, he hails from Tiwi, Albay and set out for Manila on his own shortly after completing his elementary years.

At night, he attended high school at Jose Rizal College (now Jose Rizal University) and worked as a newsboy, peddling and delivering newspapers during the day. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Journalism at the Lyceum of the Philippines.

Using Clyde Mariano for his byline, he began his sports writing career at the Philippine News Agency (PNA) under the late Joe Favia.

He got his biggest break when he was tapped as a pioneer correspondent and, later as a regular sportswriter for Tempo, the tabloid daily of the Manila Bulletin, starting in 1982.

Shortly after his retirement, he served as a regular contributor in Bulgar and Pilipino Mirror.
