With Jacob Cortez showing the way, the Red Lions smothered the Chiefs 85-61 in their opening match in the 99th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

In the other game, Mapua University drubbed San Sebastian College 80-70 to join San Beda and opening day winners Jose Rizal University and Lyceum in the early lead with identical 1-0 marks.

Cortez pumped in 16 points spiked by four three-pointers, on top of three rebounds and five assists, while Damie Cuntapay chipped in 13 markers and 10 boards.

James Payosing, Yukien Andrada, and Peter Alfaro also had 13, 12, and 11 points, respectively for the Lions.

San Beda coach Yuri downplayed his wards’ rout, saying: “There’s a long way to go, it was just the first game of the season. Arellano played tough, especially in the second half and as the season progresses, I’m sure the other teams will play tougher.

“So, we have to be ready for those kinds of games. We have to be better and be able to manage those kinds of defenses against us,” he added.

The Mendiola-based five raced to a fast start and grabbed a 57-26 edge at the break.

The Lions hardly met resistance from there from the rebuilding Chiefs, who are playing with nine rookies this season under new tactician Chico Manabat.

Warren Bonifacio led three other Cardinals in double figures with 16 points and eight caroms, while JC Recto added 15 markers and nine rebounds.

Clint Escamis and Paolo Hernandez had 12 points each for Mapua.
