Lady Spikers seize solo second

IF La Salle’s gunners show consistency, the Lady Spikers would be hard to stop.

La Salle proved this yesterday, scoring an emphatic 25-23, 25-17, 22-25, 25-8 victory over University of Santo Tomas for its third straight win and seized solo second in the 84th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

Leila Cruz banged in 15 points to show the way for the Lady Spikers, while the towering duo of Fifi Sharma and Thea Gagate tallied 15 points each.

Jolina Dela Cruz also had 11 points, 14 excellent digs, and 10 excellent receptions and Alleiah Malaluan 10 points and 10 excellent receptions for La Salle.

The Lady Spikers, coming off a 25-21, 25-23, 25-21 triumph over University of the Philippines three days ago, rose to 8-3.

UST absorbed its second straight loss, counting a 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 setback at the hands of defending champion Ateneo last Tuesday, fell to 7-4 for third.

In the first match, University of the Philippines whipped also-ran Far Eastern University 25-10, 25-19, 25-7 and snapped a two-game losing streak.

Alyssa Bertolano led the Fighting Maroons with 14 points, on top of seven excellent digs, and four excellent receptions, while Ethan Arce added 13 markers.

Stephanie Bustrillo also had 12 points as UP made up for a 25-21, 25-23, 25-21 defeat to La Salle last Tuesday and improved to 5-6 for sixth.

The Lady Tamaraws failed to recover from a 25-17, 25-17, 25-16 defeat to Adamson University also last Tuesday and dropped to 1-10.
