DEFENDING champion National University moved closer to a first-round sweep by humbling Adamson University yesterday 25-21, 25-23, 25-18 in the 87th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
Opposite spiker and KOVO Asian Draft aspirant Alyssa Solomon shone with a game-high 22 points, 15 off attacks; four blocks and three service aces while outside spikerVangeAlinsug added 12 points and four excellent receptions.
The Sampaloc-based Lady Bulldogs remained perfect in their title-retention bid with a 6-0 card while Adamson slipped to 2-4 after absorbing its third straight loss.
“I think mag-i-improve pa iyong performance ng NU going to the second round and sa Sunday [last game of the first round],” said NU coach Sherwin Meneses, who mentored Adamson from 2012 to 2016.
The win was a huge boost for the Lady Bulldogs before their highly anticipated showdown with the Golden Tigresses of UST on Sunday at the Big Dome. The two teams clashed for the title last season.
The Lady Bulldogs finished the match with 44 attack points to Adamson’s 29 and also did a good job limiting the Lady Falcons’ super rookie Shaina Nitura.
Nitura, the young Adamson skipper, registered a season-low 13 points while tallying 15 excellent receptions and eight digs defensively.
Open spiker Frances Mordi also chipped in 13 markers in the losing effort.
