HAVING a team made up of young spikers still learning the ropes, National University coach Karl Dimaculangan said his belles needed a big boost in a way of a first-round sweep. The Bulldogs got what they wanted yesterday.

NU barely broke a sweat and carved out a runaway 25-10, 25-20, 25-15 victory over slumping University of the Philippines for its seventh straight win in the 84th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

Mhicaela Belen scattered a game-high 13 points, all on attacks for NU, while skipper Princess Robles chipped in 12 markers built on 11 spikes.

Middle blocker Ivy Lacsina also tallied 11 points for the Lady Bulldogs, who scored a big follow-up to their 25-10, 25-11, 25-12 drubbing of Far Eastern University three days ago and remained unscathed with a 7-0 record.

The Fighting Maroons, coming off a 25-12, 25-17, 25-19 setback to La Salle last Tuesday, fell to 3-4.

In the first game, Adamson University humbled University of the East 25-23, 25-20, 25-18 to get back on track.

May Ann Nuiqui led the Lady Falcons with 15 points off 11 spikes and four blocks, while Lorene Toring added 14 markers.

Andrea Cruz also had 10 points as Adamson made up for a deflating 12-25, 25-19, 25-22, 18-25, 15-9 loss to UST last Tuesday and improved to 4-3.
