VETERANS Rogen Ladon and John Marvin scored impressive, abbreviated victories last Wednesday night to advance to the next round of the World Olympic Qualification Boxing Tournament at the E-Work Arena in Busto Arsizio, Italy.

Bidding to become the first Filipino boxer to compete in two Olympics after making his debut in the 2016 Rio Summer Games, Ladon made short work of Said Mortaji, stopping the Moroccan with a minute and .01 seconds left in the second round for his second straight win in the men’s flyweight division.

Competing as a converted heavyweight, Marvin overwhelmed Uzbekistan’s Lazizbek Mullonov in the first round, prompting the referee to give the Uzbek two standing eight counts before stopping the fight.

But highly regarded Herge Bacyadan absorbed a heart-breaking 2-3 decision at the hands of Brazilian Viviane Pereira in their first-round women’s middleweight encounter to bid goodbye to her Olympic dreams, at least for now.

Judging from the scorecards, the match could have gone either way with Perreira earning identical scores of 29-28 from three judges while two judges scored it 30-27 and 29-28 for Bacyadan.

In a battle of two southpaws, Ladon, 31, is expected to rely heavily on his vast experience against Briton and former 2022 European silver medalist Kiaran McDonald, who recorded a referee-stopped-contest win in 1:17 of the third round over Trinidad and Tobago’s Al Jhaleel Ortega Jokhu.

Their match scheduled last night was expected to be a closely contested one. McDonald was quoted in the Olympic.com as saying he gives it his “100 percent every time I step into the ring” after beating his second-round opponent.

As for the soft-spoken Ladon, fans can expect his fists to do the talking.

Nesthy Petecio was set to fight last night against Romania’s Maria Claudia Nechita in the women’s featherweight class while fellow Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Carlo Paalam, who drew a bye in the first round, was to face Ecuador’s Jean Carlos Caicedo Panchito in the men’s featherweight class.
