LAOAG City is a virtual beehive of sports activity under Laoag Mayor Michael Keon as its athletes gird for the Region 1 Athletic Association sportsfest that Ilocos Norte will host next month, a regional meet that will serve as a qualifier for the Palarong Pambansa in Cebu in July.

On any given day, Keon, who used to be the project director of the highly successful Gintong Alay program, will be seen keeping tabs on the athletes who have been training intensively since January so they can make their mark in the sportsfest and represent Region 1 in the Cebu meet.

“Hopefully, we will be able to improve from our third overall standings from the previous year,” said Keon, who was known as something of a Prussian drillmaster at the helm of Gintong Alay, which ushered in a Philippine sports renaissance from the late seventies to early the eighties.

During the recent staging of the 2nd Laoag Sand Dunes Challenge, Keon took Manila-based sportswriters who covered the event on a whirlwind tour of some athletes in training in volleyball, dancesport, sepak takraw, badminton and, of course, athletics, in various training venues.
