JRU belles end skid, beat Perpetual

JOSE Rizal University turned back Perpetual Help 25-19, 25-20, 20-25, 25-18 yesterday to snap a three-game losing skid in the 97th NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the Paco Arena.

Skipper Dolly Grace Verzosa led the way with 17 points, on top of 23 digs and 13 excellent receptions for the Lady Bombers, while Riza Rose added 12 markers.

Renesa Melgar and Mary Ruiz also finished with 10 points each for JRU, which bounced back from a 25-18, 19-25, 25-18, 25-19 loss to defending three-time champion Arellano University five days ago and improved to 3-3 for fifth.

The Lady Altas failed to atone for a 24-26, 26-28, 25-20, 25-20, 17-15 defeat to San Sebastian College last Sunday and dropped to 2-4.

In the first match, Emilio Aguinaldo College bucked a slow start to down Lyceum 26-28, 25-15, 27-25, 25-17 for its first win.

Krizzia Reyes scored 24 points for the Lady Generals, to go with 13 digs, and six excellent receptions, while team captain Cathrine Almazan finished with 14 markers.

Libero Alex Salvaloza also had 20 receptions and 15 digs for EAC, which recovered from a 17-25, 27-25, 25-23, 25-23 setback at the hands of San Beda University also last Sunday and went up to 1-5 in a tie with Letran.

The Lady Pirates came off a 25-14, 25-22, 28-30, 25-12 triumph over the Lady Knights last Saturday and fell to 3-3.

“Actually, very happy and very proud of them. Alam ko naman na it’s in them kaso minsan lang nanggigigil, na-overexcite or minsan I guess ninenerbyos but iyong skills nandoon,” Lady Bombers coach Mia Tioseco said. — Abby Toralba
