THE International Olympic Committee has waived the three-year residency rule for Fil-Canadian swimmer Kayla Sanchez, meaning she can now compete in qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Philippine Olympic Committee president and Tagaytay Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino received the notice of the IOC Executive Board decision exempting Sanchez from the three-year waiting period in a letter dated Nov. 29 by James Macleod, IOC Director of NOC Relations and Olympic Solidarity, a copy of which was obtained by Malaya-Business Insight yesterday.

“In view of the Olympic Charter, in particular paragraph 2 of the Bye-Law to Rule 41, the IOC Executive Board decided to consent to your request from exemption of three-year waiting period and thus confirm the eligibility (from a nationality perspective) of Ms. Kayla Sanchez to represent the Philippines at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, subject to qualification,” Macleod wrote.

Macleod said the correspondence was in response to a letter sent by Tolentino last Nov. 8 requesting the eligibility of the swimmer to qualify and compete for the country in the Paris Olympics.
