SAN FERNANDO. – The gloomy Wednesday afternoon weather here proved to be just an aberration for what turned out to be the festive opening ceremony for a newly-launched youth grassroots international cage tilt.
Drawing 30 teams from local soil and overseas, the inaugural Sinag Liga Asya Junior World Showcase Delta Cup got going at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center.
“We’re happy and magfi-first year pa lang ang Sinag Liga Asya but now we’re going international,” SLA chairman Rocky Chan told Malaya-Business Insight as the games kicked off at press time. “We didn’t expect we could have around 30 teams joining us in this first SLA junior world showcase.
“We’re excited and hopefully, this is just the beginning,” he added, referring to the meet that has Royce Hotel, Pampanga Governor Dennis “Delta” Pineda, Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go, Converge, 007 Management Group, Winzens Café, J Project, and Cablelink as sponsors.
The joust that will run from July 17 to 21 features four divisions–the 15-Under, 17-Under, 19-Under, and 23-Under to be played in two other venues at the Don Honorio Ventura State University and Bacolor Mini-Convention Center.
“Siguro nakita lang ng mga international partners natin the level of competition dito sa Pilipinas and they want to showcase also Filipino talents na naka-based abroad to have time, come over and give the opportunity kumbaga equal opportunity to showcase their talents,” Chan, who was joined in the opening rites by league president Rey Alao, chief operation officer Leo Isaac, Commissioner Rodney Santos, and Vice President for International Affairs Eric Quintana.
