Heated finals battle rears ugly head

NEARLY four years after he was given a second chance by the PBA, enigmatic Magnolia star Calvin Abueva appeared to have forgotten the lessons he learned and took to heart in a 16-month ban.

This time, Abueva figured in a heated and emotional word war with the wife of San Miguel Beer big man Mo Tautuua after the Beermen’s 109-85 ripping of the Hotshots in Game 2 of their best-of-7 Commissioner’s Cup finals showdown.

Commissioner Willie Marcial said the pro league will review videos and talk to witnesses present when Abueva and Tautuaa’s better half Aida engaged in a shouting match at a hallway near the exit of the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

Tautuaa and Abueva, former teammates at Gilas Pilipinas under former coach Tab Baldwin and were initially included in last year’s national team training pool of tactician Tim Cone, will also be summoned by Marcial.

“I had to walk past him to go to the restroom. He smirked at me, nodded his head up and down and said, “yeaaa” laughing,” Aida Tautuaa said late Sunday night on X (formerly twitter). “I said, ‘wtf is wrong with you’ and kept walking. He walked after me and literally got in my face.”

Abueva denied he smirked at her and said it was Tautuaa’s spouse who was disrespectful when he was on his way out of the venue.

“Dumaan siya dito, hinihintay ako anak ko, and then sabi niya ‘what the (expletive) are you smiling. Sino siya para mag-smile ako sa kanya?” a furious Abueva said.

“Bakit niya ako ginanon? Hinihintay ko asawa ko tapos ganoon gagawin niya.”

The tension seemed to have been died down when Abueva looked to have left the Pasay-based arena, but he returned with his wife Sam to confront the Tautuaas.

Abueva even dared Tautuaa to a fistfight, saying: “Mo pagsabihan mo asawa mo ha! (Expletive) ano Mo suntukan tayo!”

Cooler heads prevailed as security personnel and members of both teams stepped in.

Then playing for Phoenix Super LPG, Abueva was suspended in 2019 for hitting former TNT import Terrence Jones with a nasty clothesline and for making lewd gestures and comments to the girlfriend of former Blackwater star Bobby Ray Parks Jr.

Just after his suspension took effect, Sam also accused him of physical and sexual abuse.

Abueva’s license was also revoked but was reinstated when his indefinite ban was lifted in the middle of the Philippine Cup bubble in Clark in 2020.

Incidentally, Abueva turned 36 last Sunday.
