HD Spikers blast High Speed Hitters, bag bronze

CIGNAL trounced PLDT 20-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-23 last night to salvage the bronze medal in the PVL Reinforced Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig.

The HD Spikers wrapped up their fifth bronze overall with Venezuelan import MJ Perez and skipper Ces Molina leading the way.

Perez scored 26 points and also had 11 excellent receptions and nine digs while Molina added 20 markers, 12 excellent receptions and nine digs.

Wing spiker Chai Troncoso chipped in 10 points while middle blocker Jacque Acuna had eight markers.

Playmaker Gel Cayuna dished out 16 excellent sets along with eight points.

Cignal will see action next in the Invitational Conference which began yesterday.

“Siyempre, sobrang happy dahil nakuha namin iyong bronze. At the same time, laging proud sa team namin dahil lumalaban talaga hanggang dulo,” HD Spikers coach Shaq Delos Santos said. “Lagi kaming thankful dahil ang daming natutunan, especially this conference na grabe iyong mga na-experience namin.

“Magiging baon namin ito sa sunod na (conference). . . Sa (Sept. 6) may laro na ulit,” he added.

Elena Samoilenko paced PLDT with 35 points, 10 excellent receptions and nine digs along with Fiola Ceballos’ 12.

The High Speed Hitters pulled out of the Invitational Conference due to multiple undisclosed injuries.

Earlier, the Invitational Conference kicked off as reigning champion Kurashiki Ablaze of Japan opened its title-retention bid with a 25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21 victory over Thailand’s Est Cola.
