TOP favorite Gomezian ruled the P1.5 million 2022 Philracom 3-Year-old Sprint last Sunday at the San Lazaro Business and Leisure Park in Carmona, Cavite.
Starting the race dead last, a no-no in a short 1,000-meter race, jockey Oneal Cortez kept Gomezian in contention as Eazacky and Club Kensai tried to outmuscle each other up front.
Gomezian made his move in the las 600 meters and rewarded owner Freddie Santos the top purse of P900,000.
Veteran trainer Danilo “Dabe” de la Cruz said he was not concerned with Gomezian’s slow start.
“Hindi talaga namin sinadyang panoorin ‘yung bakbakan sa harapan, ganun na talaga siya. Parang bumebwelo,” De la Cruz said.
Cortez also said he did not panic while they were at the tailend of the pack.
“Kilala ko na ng todo ‘yung kabayo ko na kapag hiningan ko na, hindi naman siya bumibitin. Kaya nung paglampas ng medya-milya at hiningan ko na siya ay naka-pwesto na kami for the win,” said Cortez.
Gomezian, by Sakima out of Hot Yoga and bred by the Esguerra Farms, clocked 59.4 seconds.
Second place went to Enigma Uno worth P337,500, Eazacky took third for P187,500, while Roaring Kanyon salvaged fourth and P75,000.
