UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas shrugged off the absence of prized rookie Angeline Poyos and downed University of the Philippines 25-14, 25-13, 28-30, 25-15 yesterday in the 86th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.
Lefty spikers Jonna Perdido and Regina Jurado made all the right decisions as the Golden Tigresses regained the top spot with a 10-1 record, half a game ahead of De La Salle University (9-1).
Perdido and Jurado unleashed 24 points apiece, with the former also contributing eight digs and four excellent receptions.
“Ni-remind ko lang din talaga ‘yung team kung sino ‘yung pinanghuhugutan namin, kung para kanino itong kailangan namin ipanalo. Luckily, nag-respond naman ng positive,” said UST captain Bernadett Pepito, who went 28-of-38 in digs along with 9-of-14 receptions.
After saving five set points, the Golden Tigresses fell in the third as Steph Bustrillo and Jewel Encarnacion secured a 30-28 win for the Fighting Maroons, extending the match.
But UST returned to its smashing ways in the fourth, just as it did in the first and second frames, ending the game in two hours and two minutes.
