STILL feeling their way as partners, Isabella Gamez and Alexsandr Korovin scored 147.67 points to finish 18th out of 23 pairs at the end of their campaign in the ISU World Figure Skating Championships at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan yesterday.
The Japanese tandem of Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara did not disappoint the hometown crowd, waltzing off with the gold medal with a top score of 222.16 points.
The American duo of Alexi Knierim and Brandon Frazier secured the silver medal (217.48) while Italians Sara Conti and Nicolo Macii garnered the bronze (208.08).
“Isabella and Alexsandr managed to score their season best in the free skate so we are happy with the way they performed,” said Philippine Skating Union president Nikki Cheng, who watched the team at the arena just outside north of Tokyo.
“Overall, it was a good debut at the world Championships for the pair. It’s really great that they proceeded and qualified for the free skate event,” Cheng said.
“I know that there’s a lot of room to grow and improve. I saw that they played it safe with their jumps, but it’s also a strategy to avoid any deductions,” she added.
“I know that they can do much more in the future, so I’m looking forward to see their progression and what they have in store for the next season.”
