Pinay booters face Myanmar in futsal opening

THE Philippines faces Myanmar in the opening of the First Asean Football Federation Women’s Futsal Championship on Nov. 16 at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig.

Ranked No. 59 in the FIFA women’s futsal world rankings, the Filipinas will face a Burmese side ranked 22 rungs higher at 37 in the five-nation competition organized by the Philippine Football Federation.      

The PFF said the roster of the national team mentored by Dutchman Vic “Mr. Futsal” Hermans will be announced on Nov. 5.

The tourney is part of efforts to hype up the inaugural FIFA Women’s Futsal World Cup the country will host in late 2025.

The hosts take on sixth-ranked Thailand on Nov. 17, followed by Vietnam (No. 11) on Nov. 19 before winding up their campaign in the single-round series on Nov. 20 against Indonesia (No. 24).

The top two teams in the tournament will dispute the championship while the No. 3 and No. 4 squads will battle for third place on the last day on Nov. 21.

The Filipinas, the national women’s football team, were eyeing their second straight win when they battle Kenya late tonight in the Pink Ladies Week in Antalya, Turkey.

The charges of coach Mark Torcaso are coming off a rousing 3-0 win over Jordan over the weekend in the six-nation series organized by FIFA licensed promoter McSPORT.
