THANKS to his gritty performance in the recent World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championships, Fil-Am Peter Joseph Groseclose has earned a ticket to the 4th Winter Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea next year, according to skating chief Nikki Cheng.
“The news that I’ve been waiting for all week! Peter qualifies for the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games in South Korea!” exclaimed Cheng, the Philippine Skating Union president, in her Facebook post yesterday.
The 4th Youth Winter Games is set Jan. 19 to Feb. 2, 2024 in the province 107 kilometers northeast of the South Korean capital of Seoul.
“Groseclose earned a quota place after his performances in the 500, 1,000 and 1,500-meter at the world junior track speed skating competition last Jan. 24 to 27 in Dresden, Germany,” Cheng added.
Cheng said the Washington-born skater, whose mother is a Filipina, placed 32 out of 68, 35 out of 67, and 43 out of 63 skaters in the 500, 1,000 and 1,500-meter races, respectively.
“The top 36 skaters in the three events make it to the Youth Winter Olympics, but since only two are allotted (per country), if a country has more than that, the other skaters move up the rankings,” she explained.
