ALEX Eala began her qualifying bid for the Miami Open early yesterday morning (Sunday in the US) on an encouraging note, stunning Italian No. 5 seed Sara Errani 6-3, 6-1 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.
It was the biggest fish so far for Eala, who moved one step closer to the main draw. Errani is the former world No. 5 and 2012 French Open women’s singles finalist.
“A day of firsts at Miami Open! First Top 100 win! First time through the final qualy of a WTA 1000 event! Let’s keep pushing!” Eala wrote on her Facebook page shortly after her upset win.
Up next for the pretty southpaw today is Colombia’s Emiliana Arango, a 7-5, 6-4 winner over American Kayla Day, for a place in the 128-player main draw.
