ALEX Eala failed to cling to an early and absorbed a 6-2, 5-7, 1-6 loss to resilient Colombian Emiliana Arango in the second qualifying round of the Miami Open at the Miami Garden courts in Florida early yesterday morning (Monday night in the US).
Eala seemed poised to advance to the main draw after a dominant performance in the first set but suddenly became stale as Arango adjusted to the Pinay southpaw’s style and battled back.
Ranked No. 171 in the world, 55 rungs higher than her rival, Arango showed her killer instincts as Eala was struck by cramps in the deciding third set, cruising the rest of the way into the tournament proper. — Bong Pedralvez
