PINOY pool sharks Jeffrey de Luna and Lee Van Cortez faced fierce hometown opposition before narrowly prevailing over their foes last Wednesday and advanced to the next round of the Hanoi Open at the My Dinh Indoor Athletics Arena in Hanoi, Vietnam.
De Luna nipped Vietnam’s Do The Kien 9-8 and Corteza edged Nguyen Phuc Kong 9-8 to inch closer to the round-of-64 of the tournament organized by British promoter Matchroom Inc.
Former world 9-ball champion Carlo Biado, who was upset in the opening round last Tuesday, kept his hopes alive by crushing Vietnamese Din Ngoc Duy in the loser’s bracket of the competition offering $30,000 (around P1.7 million) to the champion.
Biado, also the 2019 US Open pool king, was set to meet Italy’s Pierfrancesco Garzia in the loser’s bracket yesterday.
Among the other Filipino winners in the second round were Michael Feliciano who beat American Michael Yednak 9-3; Kyle Amoroto who whipped Briton Paul McCarthy 9-4; Dennis Orcollo who routed Vietnam’s Nguyen Duc Dhuy 9-0; and Roland Garcia who dumped Vietnam’s Nguyen Hoang Phong 9-3.
