SOME of the world’s top dancesport pairs are expected to descend in Cebu City tomorrow for the World Dancesport Federation Cebu Open at the grand ballroom of the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Lahug.
Considered the father of the attractive yet demanding discipline in Cebu, PSC Commissioner Ed Hayco said they expect close to a thousand dancesport athletes from 26 countries to see action in the competition sanctioned by the WDSF.
Among the campaigners who will compete in the WDSF Standard and Latin Open are coming from the US, France, Germany, Australia, Serbia, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Sweden, Russia, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Switzerland, Poland, and Spain.
“We are expecting around 1,000 athletes. So far, we now have around 600 couples registered already,” said the PSC official, who also formed the Dancesport Team Cebu City and was the former Cebu City Sports Commission chairman.
As CSSC chief, Hayco launched a grassroots dancesport program more than a decade ago that has drawn young children from humble backgrounds by the thousands and turned them into world-class athletes.
Among the program’s products are Cebuanos and 2019 Philippine Southeast Asian Games triple gold medalists Sean Mischa Aranar and Ana Leonila Nualla and the pair of Mark Jason Gayon and Mary Joy Renigen, who won two mints in the same games.
To be held simultaneously with the WDSF Cebu Open is the Philippine Dancesport Federation 3rd Quarter Ranking competition.
