FILIPINO-SPANISH athlete John Cabang gave hometown bet David Yefremov and China’s Qin Weibo a run for their money before winding up with the bronze medal, clocking 7.64 seconds in the men’s 60-meter hurdles of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tehran, Iran last Saturday.
Racing in lane 8, Cabang ran neck-and-neck with Yefremov and Qin until the last half-step before being relegated to third place by a hairline.
Yefremov took the gold and Weibo settled for the silver with times of 7.60 and 7.63 seconds, respectively.
Cabang’s national teammate, Janry Ubas, cleared 7.60 meters on his fifth try and placed fifth in the men’s long jump won by China’s Zhang Mingkun (7.97) at the Afthab Enghelab Complex in the Iranian capital.
The two athletes were fielded by the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association to the Asian indoor meet since they are considered solid bets to qualify for the Paris Olympics in July, according to Patafa Secretary General Jasper Tanhueco.
