Brownlee: Make the game ugly

GINEBRA star import Justin Brownlee is convinced making TNT bleed for its points should be one of the keys in the championship battle which has been reduced to a best-of-5.

“I think in this series, coach (Tim Cone) has been, since the start of it, saying it’s going to be a defensive series,” Brownlee said. “Some games we’re just going to have to win ugly, and I think that was a perfect example in Game 2. Low-scoring game.

“So, I think if we want to continue having success in this series, I think it’s going to be very important we use all our effort we can on defense and just try to, you know, I guess, make the game ugly,” he added.

That was the case in the Kings’ gritty 71-70 escape over the Tropang Giga in Game 2 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup finals last Sunday night.

The 6-foot-5 Brownlee stood in the forefront of Ginebra’s offense, exploding for a game-high 35 points, on top of 11 rebounds, while former MVP Scottie Thompson backed him up with 16 markers, 12 boards, and seven assists.

“I just try to be all around. I’ve been lucky in the past to be able to get opportunities to shoot threes and make them,” Brownlee said.

“I just try to read the defense. Whatever the defense gives me, I just try to take that.”

The pivotal Game 3 is set today at 7:30 p.m. at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig.
