TOKYO Olympic silver medalist Carlo Paalam and Mark Ashley Fajardo lost to separate rivals late Sunday, becoming the latest Filipino casualties in the World Boxing Championships for Elite Men and Women at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, England.
Paalam could not make any headway against the tall and lanky Dominican Junor Alcantara Reyes, a Paris Olympic bronze medalist, who outpointed the Filipino fighter 4-1 in their second-round men’s 55-kilogram clash.
A 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games veteran, Fajardo absorbed a 0-5 beating at the hands of Uzbek Elvin Aliiev to join super featherweight Junmilardo Ogayre, who fell 0-5 to Kazakh Zhexen Bilbars.
Scheduled to fight today is light flyweight Jay Bryan Baricuatro, who drew an opening-round bye, in a second-round match against Martin Molina Salvador of Spain.
