WHILE the title clash between defending World Boxing Council champion Mario Barrios of the US and Filipino challenger Manny Pacquiao ended in a controversial majority draw, both boxers, especially the Pinoy ring icon, are expected to take home hefty paychecks after their fight at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.
“Both Pacquiao and Barrios are in line to make a hefty chunk of change from their fight,” Teddy Ricketson of the Sporting News wrote over the weekend in an article posted on the American sports magazine’s website.
Ricketson surmised that, based on reports, “the challenger looks to make a baseline purse of $12 million (around P686 million) and will take home a significant portion of the PPV (pay-per-view) sales.”
The Amazon Prime Video for the entire boxing program came to $79.95 (P4,571) per subscription.
“It is estimated that Pacquiao could end up between $17 million (P972,085 million) and $18 million (P1.02 billion) for the fight,” the article noted, underscoring how bankable and what a major box-office draw the Pinoy prizefighter still was.
On the other hand, Barrios was “expected to have a baseline between $500,000 (P28.6 million) and $1 million (P57.216 million). He will take home a good chunk of television revenue, but his overall net won’t surpass $2.5 million (P143 million).”
