FORMER world 9-ball champion Carlo Biado absorbed a stunning 8-9 loss to hometown bet Ngo Quang Trung Tuesday night at the start of the Hanoi Open Pool Championship at the My Dinh Indoor Athletics Arena in the Vietnamese capital.
Biado, the 2019 US Open Pool champion known by his moniker “Black Tiger, reached the hill comfortably ahead 8-5 and looked poised to advance into the next round of the tournament organized by British promoter Matchroom.
But with the support of the Vietnamese crowd, Ngo grimly fought back and won the next four racks, completing the come-from-behind win while relegating Biado to the losers’ bracket of the $200,000 (around P11.3 million) competition.
Biado battled Vietnam’s Din Ngoc Duy last night, needing to win to stay alive.
Ngo’s reward for winning was facing another Filipino, James Aranas, who fashioned a 9-8 squeaker over Italian Pierfrancisco Garcia in the competition offering a top pot of $30,000 (P1.7 million).
Also advancing to the winner’s bracket today was another Pinoy, Patric Gonzales, who took out Singapore’s Sharik Sayed 9-6 also last Tuesday and advanced against Germany’s Moritz Neuhausen, who dumped Nizam Uddin 9-5 of Bangladesh.
Also advancing was Oliver Jay Villafuerte, who meets American Skyler Woodward after vanquishing countryman Warren Kiamco 9-5.
