THERE’S always a first time for everything, like the Big Dance duel pitting University of the Philippines and La Salle for all the marbles in this season’s UAAP cage wars.

The Fighting Maroons are seeking their second title in the last three seasons while the Green Archers will try to end a longer wait–their first diadem since 2016.

One team will get closer to completing its mission when the two teams clash today in Game 1 of their best-of-3 finals showdown for the 86th UAAP basketball crown at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

The match is set at 6 p.m.

Boosted by a 57-46 win that ousted erstwhile champion Ateneo in their Final Four tiff four days ago, UP is out for blood.

“Every team has its own journey this season and like I said earlier, ours started on January 16 this year,” UP assistant coach Christian Luanzon said. “I’m sure the other teams could say that as well. With us, half of our teams are rookies, some came in half of the year, managing injuries and all that. Our journey at this point is that we’re already seeing the finish line.

“It’s just a matter of us putting the pedal to the metal in the race. For us, it’s all about taking advantage of what we built all throughout the year and finishing it up hopefully the way we wanted to, the way we envision it,” he added.

The Maroons are expected to draw strength from the likes of reigning MVP Malick Diouf, CJ Cansino, Gerry Abadiano, JD Cagulangan, Harold Alarcon, and Francis Lopez in their bid to regain the title they won last year.
