Teams in Minda leg under microscope

DETERMINED not to let another game-fixing controversy hound the VisMin Super Cup, the Games and Amusements Board has put the teams set to see action in the Mindanao leg of the Chooks-to-Go-backed pro league under the microscope.

GAB Chairman Baham Mitra told Malaya-Business Insight yesterday they have identified several players involved in game-fixing but they will be allowed to suit up in the Mindanao leg unless proven guilty.

“We flagged several players and warned team owners of their connection or allegations of game-fixing in the past, but we cannot bar them from playing as unless proven guilty in court they are presumed innocent, but warnings will be issued,” Mitra said.

“We have already informed them about our findings sa mga nai-submit nilang line-ups and team owners. We’re waiting for their final submission,” he added.

Suspicions of game-fixing in the league were raised after two squads — Siquijor and ARQ Builders-Lapu Lapu City — figured in a mockery of a match in the Visayas leg last month at the Alcantara Civic Center in Cebu.

The Mindanao leg came under scrutiny from the GAB but was eventually greenlighted.
Mitra said those players will still be under close watch by the league and GAB.
