Reyes takes good with the bad

COACH Chot Reyes sees no problem taking back the reins of Gilas Pilipinas.

“My family understands and appreciates the fact that not everyone gets an opportunity like this,” Reyes said on The Game.

“They’re just worried that it might be a setup to fail because we’re playing a game right away,” he added.

Reyes, 58, is eyeing to field the core of reigning Philippine Cup champion TNT for the 2023 FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers this month at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“We’re entering a window in three weeks’ time. We don’t even have a team to speak of right now. But when you accept a job like this, you take the good with the bad,” Reyes said.

“We know that there will be difficulties but like I said kung kailangang gawin, gawin.”

There are eight Tropang Giga players who have donned the Gilas’ jersey before, namely, Jayson Castro, Roger Pogoy, Troy Rosario, JP Erram, Kelly Williams, Ryan Reyes, and newly acquired Carl Bryan Cruz and Matt Ganuelas-Rosser.

It will be Reyes’ fourth tour of duty as tactician of the Filipino cagers and third in the last nine years, his last stint ending unceremoniously in 2018 after the infamous Gilas-Australia brawl in their World Cup qualifiers match at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.
